9 tips to be a better DIGGer

Thinks you must keep in mind on digg if you want to be popular :

#1 Make friends

Make as many friends as you can . Make quality friends that will help you get on the first page. To get on the front page of Digg (to make it popular) you must get at least 51 diggs in the first 24 hours. Your friends are the only ones that can help you be popular

#2 Respect your friends

Treat everyone with respect , do not do or say things that might affect your image. Be professional in all your discussions , comments , and emails . If someone asks you a question , answer back, help him out and you will be helped back

#3 Post quality content

Do not post everything you see on the internet . Post only the good quality content , articles and pages that really matter . Post unique articles , stand out of the crowd , and Digg will pay you back in good quality traffic . The more bad content you post , the lower your image in the eyes of your friends gets

#4 Digg back

If someone sends you a shout , check it out . Post a comment , digg it , let him know that you did. This way your friends will see that they matter in your eyes . You will be respected on the long run . If you get too many shouts try to sort them out , check only the ones you are interested in , but keep in mind , comment and digg is the way to go

#5 Post in the right category

When you post an article , do not rush it , think . Make a good description , something that will catch the eye of your friends , not too long but not too short . Choose carefully the category , this can make the difference between 5-10 diggs and 50 – 70 diggs . Even if you think the article should be in more than one category , choose the most relevant one .

#6 Quality comments

When you comment a fellow poster’s article , do it well . Do not rush into typing some words , have patience . If you post a good comment the other user may be impressed , he may comment back or give you a digg . It is all about the attitude .

#7 Be active

You don’t have to log in 5 times a day , but once a day would help . Log in , check your messages and your friend’s activities . You don’t have to post and digg every day but by logging in every day (if it is possible) you show your friends and fans that you are there .

#8 Do not abuse the shout

DO not shout too much , you can stress out your friends and fans . If you shout too much and too often not only they will ignore you , but they might unfriend you also . Be reasonable , use common sense and treat them as you whould like to be treated

#9 Have fun

The purpose of a social network is people meeting people. Build relationships , and make lifetime friends . Do not consider Digg as a work place , think about it like a game . Do not be too serious , have fun , smile and laugh . Disconnect from reality and read the latest wacky stories your friends wrote :)

How to choose a Hosting Company – Tips of the Trade

In this article I will not tell you where to go , I do not promote a certain hoster , and this is not an advertisment .

I will discuss what you need to do to find the best hosting service you need , what to look for and how to not get tricked by the flashy banners and promotions.

There are many hosting companies online , each having something special to offer. It can be the greatest thing in the world to end up with a good one , but also a nightmare when you end up with a not so good one

What to look for :

Live support

This is a must , although in our days there are a few hosters without customer live support it is still something to watch out for

24/7 ticket support

A ticket is a way to communicate with the hosting service via email. It is fast , simple and efficient . Also the ticket is a way to ensure you that no one else can make requests for you , anyone can come in live support , bun only via a ticket can anything get done .

This is good for you and for the hosting techs.

Hosting plans

All the hosting companies must have plans . The hosting plans are pre-set configurations from where a customer can choose. A good hoster will always have balanced plans , with pre-set applications and features. Balanced is the key word here .

If it is too good to be true – it isn’t

Do not go for the cheapest solution , shop around , think , read reviews . If you see promotions that are insanely cheap , there IS a catch . Nothing in this world comes free . Your business will suffer in the long run and you will end up paying more than expected

Free hosting

Stay away from this , unless you have a one page site that you don’t care of . Free hosting is not something you can rely on , even if you have non-profit sites , family websites , do not go there. I saw stories of people loosing data that would make anyone weep . If you are serious in making a name for yourself online you need to spend some money first . Choose a well known hosting service.

Reviews

Listen to people and the experiences they had , the best feedback comes from people like you. Read reviews , opinions and do not rush into signing up . Hosting is like a marriage , think before jumping in.

Do not pay in advance

Even if you are offered a discount / special offer if you pay one year in advance , don’t do it . You may be sorry later , you may discover that the service is not the one promised , your websites are not running as you would like or any other reason . Best way to approach it is with a maximum of three months in advance.

Present clients

Each hosting company should have a short list of its best clients . I was amazed to see that some hosting companies that where unknown to me until recently that had huge and very popular clients. I will not state names , but all I can say , when you see that the giants of the internet has chosen a certain company , you just know that they are good at what they do. Even if the list is not public , you should enter the live support chat and ask a tech for references .

Backup system

Do not go to any hosting company that does not offer a certain level of backup . Not RAID in case the hardware crashes , I am talking about backups that you can restore at any time . Some sell this feature , I do not agree with that , indeed I would buy a better backup system plan , but by default I should have something also .

Datacenter personnel

If you go with a dedicated/colocated server you need to make sure they can access the hardware very fast. Always ask if the company has its own datacenter , or if they have a tech in the rented datacenter space . It is always good to know there is someone there 24/7 to do an emergency reboot or a disk replacement .

Go with your instinct

If your first impression is a bad one , there is a big possibility that you are right . If you think something is not right , leave do not linger in doubt . You will sleep better at night knowing your data is safe

Conclusion

It is up to all of us to search and compare , we can get all the feedback in the world about a company , until you try it out you will never know for sure how it is . I advise everyone to search and send feedbacks , real ones so someone new to the system would know where to go .

It is true some hosters have good and bad periods , you may come in a bad time for them , and catch them off-guard , do not be discouraged , try and try again .

We are all here to help each other .

How to register nameservers

enom.com

After logging in to your account:

  1. Click ‘domain names’ on the left menu.
  2. Click ‘register DNS’ on the left menu.
  3. If registering the nameservers for the first time use the ‘Register a NameServer Name’ section.
  4. If you have previously registered nameservers for your domain, use the ‘Update a NameServer IP’ section.
  5. Enter the information provided in the e-mail you would have received during your account setup procedure.
  6. This information is under the ‘Nameservers’ section and has two values in the following format:
    ns1.domainname.com – IP address (1111.1111.1111.1111)
    ns2.domainname.com – IP address (2222.2222.2222.2222)

Bulkregister.com

You must have your domain registered with BulkRegister in order to set up name servers for that domain. There is no cost to register name servers.

To create name servers using your domain name you must use the web interface.

  1. Click on “List Domains”
  2. From the list, click on the domain you want to create the name servers for. An example would be: if you wish to create ns1.domain.com and ns2.domain.com, you would find “domain.com” in your list of domains and click on it.
  3. Click on the option, “Manage Name Servers”
  4. Click on the option, “To create child name servers of this domain, click here.”
  5. Add the prefix you wish to use for that name server (the prefix, i.e. ns1, ns2), (the suffix, i.e. .com, .net, .org does not have to be included since it is already listed). The prefix is placed in the left hand box. Note that the prefixes must be entered exactly as supplied by Webhosting.net.
  6. Enter the corresponding IP address in the right hand box. This is the IP address that your nameserver software is/will be installed on.
  7. Click on “Create Name Servers”
  8. Verify that all changes are correct and click on “Confirm”

When creating name servers, the IP address in use has to be valid and can be supplied by a hosting company.

Network solutions

Your nameservers servers will be in the format of (with a corresponding IP address for each nameserver):

NS1.YOUR-NAME.COM
NS2.YOUR-NAME.COM

To register your nameservers log on to your account with network solutions and complete the ‘Host registration form’, following the instructions. We have also included some helpful instructions below:

How to fill out the Network Solutions form

Here is a quick guide to registering your nameservers. You need to fill the form twice (once per nameserver)

General Information
Enter your e-mail address
Select the “NEW” option

Host Information
Host NIC Handle:
(leave blank, since you don’t have one yet)
Host Name:
Enter the nameserver you are registering (in the format of NS1.YOURNAME.COM)
IP Address:
Enter the IP address we assigned to you for that nameserver

Contact Information
Enter your NIC handle. If you don’t know your NIC handle, you can get this by doing a WHOIS lookup of your main domain name
Or, you can create a new contact record by leaving the ‘NIC Handle’ field blank and filling out the rest of the form.

Host Form Authorization Information
Select your preferred Authentication Method, and then press the “Generate Host Form” at the bottom of the page
You will then be presented with a completed Host Template. Press the button at the bottom of the page, “Mail this Host Form to me” and a copy will be e-mailed to you.
YOU MUST now check your e-mail, and send the form back to Network Solutions for processing (just reply to their e-mail to send them back the template)
Do not forget to send them back the form! Otherwise they will not process your registration.
Now do the same for your secondary DNS server.
Once your DNS servers have been registered, you can use them when you register new Domain Names, and you can modify your existing Domain Name records and change the DNS servers to your own.

OpenSRS

Log in to your OpenSRS account.

In the Manage Name Servers section, and at the bottom of the page, you will see a link: “If you want to create or modify a name server which is based on {your domain} click here.”

Here you can register a name server based on the domain. All name servers must have an unique IP and must be set-up and running for at least 24 hours before you register them here. Type the prefix for your name server and its IP address and click Create Name Server. We suggest that you do not use the prefix “www” as this may cause a problem with your web server lookups. Use the nameservers exactly as issued to you by Webhosting.net, Inc

The most common error when setting up a newnameserver is: “Unable to create nameserver: Registry error, nameserver creation failed [Attribute value not unique]”
This means that the IP address you entered is already taken. You may either find another IP or delete the existing nameserver host record.

Go Daddy

Go to the Go Daddy Home Page

Click the “My Account” link on the upper left.

Login using your login name or customer number and password

Click the link labeled,

“Domain List”

in the GOTO section. If you have trouble logging in, the Password Retrieval Form may help you:

ONCE LOGGED INTO YOUR ACCOUNT:

  1. Click on the domain that you wish to use for your name servers
  2. Locate ‘Domain Host Information’ at the bottom.
  3. Use the link named ‘click here to add’
  4. Enter the first name server with its IP
  5. Click ‘Register Name Server’
  6. Enter the second name server with its IP
  7. Click ‘Register Name Server’
  8. Allow two days for the name servers to be registered

The reason for the delay is complex, but has to do with the fact that there are several networks that whose records must be updated in order for your name servers to be recognized. As they are administered by different agencies this takes time. Within 48 hours, you should be able to use your new name servers.

ngrep – network grep

This tool is a life saver . I had to use it today to debug some mail issues , a client chould not log in . If you know how to use it you will know everything is happening on your network – in and out

Anyway i whould like to say thanks to the makers ngrep.sourceforge.net

Description:

ngrep strives to provide most of GNU grep’s common features, applying them to the network layer. ngrep is a pcap-aware tool that will allow you to specify extended regular or hexadecimal expressions to match against data payloads of packets. It currently recognizes IPv4/6, TCP, UDP, ICMPv4/6, IGMP and Raw across Ethernet, PPP, SLIP, FDDI, Token Ring and null interfaces, and understands BPF filter logic in the same fashion as more common packet sniffing tools, such as tcpdump and snoop.

Basic Usage :
