Introduction

Our DNS Propagation Checker is a powerful tool designed to help you track the spread of your domain's DNS record changes across the internet. Whether you've updated your website's IP address, changed mail servers, or modified other DNS settings, this tool provides a real-time view of how these changes are being reflected by various DNS servers globally. Understanding DNS propagation is crucial for ensuring your online services remain accessible and function correctly after any DNS modifications.

How DNS Propagation Works

When you update your domain's DNS records with your DNS provider, these changes aren't instantaneous worldwide. The process involves several steps:

  1. Authoritative Server Update: Your DNS provider updates the records on their authoritative DNS servers.
  2. TTL (Time To Live): Each DNS record has a TTL value, which tells other DNS servers how long to cache the record's information. Common TTLs range from a few minutes to 24-48 hours.
  3. Recursive Server Caching: Internet Service Providers (ISPs) and public DNS resolvers (like Google DNS or Cloudflare) run recursive DNS servers. When a user tries to access your domain, their recursive server queries the authoritative servers. It then caches the result for the duration of the TTL.
  4. Cache Expiration and Refresh: Once the TTL expires, recursive servers will fetch the updated record from the authoritative servers the next time they receive a query for your domain.

This staggered update process across thousands of servers worldwide is known as DNS propagation. Our tool queries multiple geographically distributed DNS servers to show you which ones have the latest information and which are still using cached, older records.
